CSL Limited is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the research, development, manufacture, marketing and distribution of biopharmaceutical and allied products to treat and prevent serious human medical ailments. It has more than 90 years experience in the development and manufacture of vaccines and plasma protein biotherapies.
The Company operates in one segment, Human Health, which has following three major business units:-
- CSL Behring: Provides plasma-derived and recombinant products, incorporating ZLB Plasma.
- CSL Biotherapies: Manufactures and markets biological products for human use, and markets vaccines and other prescription pharmaceuticals for international partners.
- CSL Bioplasma: Manufactures plasma products to treat bleeding disorders (such as, hemophilia), to treat infections and autoimmune diseases, and to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn.
Following are major activities in year 2006-07:-
- CSL received royalty payment of $ 86 million from Merck & Co. on global sale of Gardasil vaccine.
- In July’07, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Privigen, first praline-stabilized liquid intravenous, for marketing in US.
- Entered into agreement with Sanofi-Aventis enabled CSL Behring to extend supply of Helixate from 2009 to 2017.
- The licensing arrangements for adjuvant technology i.e. ISCOMATRIX has been extended with Merck and Wyeth so that it can be supplied in US market as well through US-based manufacturing unit.
- Acquired Zenyth Therapeutics Limited to help in research programs in cancer, immunology and inflammation.
Company is headquartered in Melbourne Australia. It has major facilities in Australia, Germany, Switzerland and the U.S. and has over 8500 employees operating in 27 countries.

Company was founded in 1916 as Commonwealth Serum Laboratories. The focus was to meet the demand for biopharmaceuticals which was locally produced. Company has been major investor in R&D activities. It was the first to supply life-saving products to Australia’ public such as Polio Vaccine, Penicillin and Insulin.
In 1994 CSL was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange with ticker of CSL.

CSL has strong new product development team. It focuses on early stage new product opportunities which are developed with collaboration of world class academic collaborators. Company strongly focuses on R&D investment and support academic projects which help in advancement of science. Company also supports market study activities which help to capture requirements and enhance product development.
Hence company has medium and long term strategy:-
- Medium Term Strategy: - To grow in market by developing differentiated products related to plasma, increase flu vaccine sales in international market, commercialize company’s adjuvant technology.
- Longer term Strategy: - To develop new products that are protected by its own intellectual property. Also to develop human health medicines with high margin that can be marketed and sold by company’s own global operations.
[edit] Financial and operational performance
Group Company’s sales revenue has increased by 11% to A$ 3.2 billion which is primarily driven by growing demand of intravenous immunoglobulin and growth in sales of plasma derived products. It has achieved a net profit after tax of $ 539 million which is 54% up compared to previous year. CLS’s profit margins have also shown continuous improvement over the years. Its % margin PBIT has increased from 7.85% in FY02-03 to 23.45% in 06-07. Similarly, its net profit margin increased to 16.3% in 2006-07 from 12% in 2005-06. The company also focuses on R&D investment which has significantly increased from A$ 92 millions in FY02-03 to A$ 191 million in FY06-07.
