Australia is the world's largest producer of bauxite, alumina, lead, rutile, zircon, sea borne coal, diamonds and ilmenite. Additionally, it is a large producer of Copper, Zinc, Iron Ore, Gold and Aluminium.
Australia's largest market (2007) is Japan. China is the fastest growing market and has doubled in the last three years. India has grown fivefold in the last five years.
Mining is roughly 5% of Australia's GDP and contributes 65% of export earnings. The ASX 300 has roughly a 21% weighting in GICS Materials and 5% in GICS Energy.
The mining sector is large scale and capital intensive, employing 1% of the workforce.
