The Company genesis goes back to 1901, when Postmaster-General's Department was established by the Commonwealth Government to manage all domestic telephone, telegraph and postal services, and to 1946, when the Overseas Telecommunications Commission was established by the Commonwealth Government to manage international telecommunications services. It incorporated as an Australian public limited liability company in November 1991.

The Company is in transformational stage and has long term objective of growing market share and increase penetration. It is investing into markets of broadband, telephone, PSTN etc. Such market growth is backed by operational excellence and financial cost control. Company has developed five pronged strategy with following focus:-

In the financial year ended 30 June, 2007 sales revenue was A$23.7 billion, growth of 4.2% from previous year and underlying EBIT A$5.8 billion. The growth has been driven by new technological advancements and increasing consumer base.
